The beginning of June. Incredibly, but
we're already in the middle of the year. I always have the impression that the
first six months last too long and as soon as we get to the summer, the rest
flies by like a blink of an eye and we're awaiting the new year. This month is
perfect to pause briefly and to look back at our New Year's decisions. How
their fruition is progressing? I remember that my friend, while we were young
girls, said that all of them, owing to New Year's Eve magic, inevitably
transforms into reality. However, I believe that we must head in their
direction and take certain actions, otherwise it's all for naught. It's
interesting how many people are hasty and immediately, at the very moment, from
January 1st enthusiastically dives into activity, but that's like starting a
marathon with a sprint – before long you'll become fatigued, falter, halt or
possibly quit. Gyms perhaps most graphically illustrates the matter, they're
crowded in January, in February that number decreases considerably, while in
March you can only seen those truly devoted and persistent. So, for me, June is
the ideal time to answer a few questions: which of New Year's decisions we have
actualized, which are yet in the process, which ones we've dismissed or even
forgot; we still have half year ahead of us and just need to dare. It's
essential to devise a strategy, because, according to an unknown author, „a dream is a dream, but a goal is a dream
with a plan and a deadline“, meaning that we're obliged to work diligently
on New Year's resolutions and not to rely on figurative charms and instant
solutions. Ther are two types of decisions, those by which we try to implement
a habit or a hobby in our routine, whether regular training, meditation,
reading, walks, increased intake of water, daily application of body creams
after showering, home spa treatments etc, and those regarding conceived
fulfillment of a concrete task that we've set for ourselves. The former remains
with us throughout lifetime and this article is oriented towards them, while
the latter, upon reaching the objective, is being replaced by upcoming
short-term ambitions.
I
admit that earlier I wasn't exactly skillful in execution of what I'm
describing, I've constantly made too much decisions, striving to achieve it all
at once, but as soon something went awry at one level I would thought this is
it, a mistake, and I'd abandon everything. Prerequisites for success are
laser-sharp focus, one hundred percent concentration and operativity, sparing
of mere half hour or hour each day for that purpose, small steps to desired
destiantion, until they emerge as an integral part of our everyday lives. If we
commence with anything, stumble and leave it for the next day or week, they
easily turn into two or three and then it's very hard to reverse to the onset.
There's no tragedy in falling down, the problem is to not rise up and it's OK
to say to oneself: tomorrow is a new day, I have a fresh chance and I'll
continue. In Jack Canfield's book „How to
Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be“ I've found an excellent
strategy that I've been employing ever since and with a help of which I've
accomplished all of my ideas. It's fairly simple and based on forming a maximum
of four decisions that you'll carry out in one year. Namely, research shows
that twenty one day of quotidian practice is required to incorporate a single
habit, while approximately three months is necessary to adopt a particular
behavior, after which it turns into lifelong constituent. Let's observe a
decision to train for example, the point is not to exercise for a month or two
prior to summer in order to look attractive in swimsuit, rather to keep
exercising during the whole year and feel good and comfortable in your own
body. Of course there will be times when we'll be tired and wish to stay in bed
and skip training, but then we should persevere more then ever, because in
those instances the self-discipline and dedication is evidenced. The reward
shall be pride for our enduring will and reminder that the loss of motivation
is nothing more than current and passing state of dispiritedness. When we
perceive that we've paved a way for some idiosyncrasy to our personality and
can no longer function without it, the we are free to switch to another one.
Decisive
people evidently emanates a distinctive kind of inner beauty, a special glow
radiates from their eyes and the vision of already attained goal from which
they draw strength that pushes them forward by the day. The triumph is materialized
in understanding and almost religious conducting of specific, uncomplicated and
established habits, and grasping it demands focussed action, personal
discipline and a significant amount of energy. The habitudes that we nurture
from now on will ultimately determine the prospect of our future. I hope that
this text brought the attention to your New Year's decisions or the ones that
lingers in your mind for quite a while. Recall them, go through them again,
create a plan and fearlessly jump into realization. It's never too late!
Habits are so important to meeting goals. I agree that it's about the long haul. Need to check out this book!

It's such a good point - I think we tend to forget all those positive resolutions once we hit the middle of the year- but it's always good to take a step back and re-look at them.

So true and well said. I will have to check out that Jack Canfield book. There are a lot of books on this type of subject and so many are a waste of time it is nice to get a positive recommendation from a real reader. You know I do not have any Chanel makeup. One day I am going to treat myself.

I don't make New Year's decisions, but my long-term goals go to the good side. I agree that falling down doesn't mean failure of our goal, it's important not to give up despite this.

I agree also that it means not automatically that a stop means that a resolution failed. But yes, time flies really!
