BEAUTY OF GRATITUDE

Happiness, love and friendship are serious aspects of life that are justifyingly spoken of on a daily basis, as well as the virtues we should strive for – modesty, humility, optimism, perseverance, diligence and compassion. However there is one, in my opinion the most important, which isn’t by far in the centre of interest as it deserve to be, and that is gratitude. I must admit that I wasn’t closely familiar with this term, better to say concept, up until high school, when I thoroughly grasped its significance after reading the sentence: “Imagine waking up tomorrow and being deprived of everything for what you didn’t thank today.”Then my portrayal of reality radically altered, in a split second I comprehended that the next morning I would be left with nothing and alone in the world, because I hadn’t thanked for anything the previous day. Till then I took more or less everything for granted, as if it’d be here forever and only devised how to attain something that will procure me benefit in the future or fantasised about material goods that I desired to possess, not paying the slightest attention to what is literally in front of my nose.Suddenly my eyes opened and I fathomed how paramount to me it actually is just to wake up in the morning, to be able to walk, to behold dawns and sunsets, to have a family and friends, to have a chance to attend college…, I could go on endlessly. Sadly, it appears to me that many aren’t aware of this, which is why this noble human trait is often overlooked and uncared for. Even during formal education they teach us various axioms, instilling in us the stance and persuasion to always be the best, to compete, to win, which doesn’t have to be bad per se, but gratitude is rarely mentioned by anyone at all.
As time went by, I embraced it as a lifestyle, an attitude, a choice and the state of mind in relation to all that is happening to me. Appreciating the little things bestowed by providence, I felt a change within myself – I simply enjoyed each new day more, had an impression that everything is unfolding according to a greater plan and that I doesn’t have to worry about every single matter, and what I wish, if it’s meant to be, it’ll come at the right moment. Aesop’s claim that “gratitude turns what we have into enough” is a perfect description of its role in our lives, because it enriches them reciprocally with its presence, as when we throw a pebble into water and propel the dissemination of concentric circles from one point. Numerous successful persons place gratitude in their top three qualities, among them Oprah Winfrey with her famous statement: “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more.” It’s not a bit complicated – what we focus on grows, and day by day reasons for gratefulness will multiply.
Constantly we hear advices: be happy!, but no one provides a formula how to fulfil that endeavour. Usually, experiences imbued by exhilaration over an achievement are of short extend, and it fades away fairly quickly. From my own perspective, I can say that gratitude is the key to true happiness, because being grateful and unhappy is impossible. Of course, sometimes we’re depressed and aren’t feeling so well, but in order not to drown deeper into the abyss of despair and dark notions, in such circumstances I start whispering to myself all of which I can be grateful for and that automatically clears my thoughts and banish the restlessness from my heart. Although people in their blind pursuit for profit daftly find causes of dissatisfaction, it’s sufficient, upon awaking, to list minimally three indicators of gratitude, for example health, roof over your head, food for breakfast – believe that motives will continue to pile up. Likewise it’s very easy to neglect how individuals from our direct surroundings facilitates our existence with their activities, and we never even remember them – bakers that prepare fresh bread and pastries, and we just stroll in and buy it, public transportation drivers who ensure that we arrive at work punctually, winter service staff that remove snow from the streets etc. Similarly, laptops, smartphones and Internet – do we ever look back with regard at the fact that we have a privilege of living in an age of rapid flow and access to information, interconnection and widespread communications network. Gratitude is a spiritual grandeur in which inner beauty is reflected, a magical orb and inexhaustible fountain of calmness. Try it for yourself, it’s not difficult in the least, and before you know it you shall harvest the fruits of bliss and carry peace in your soul.

  7. I couldn't agree more with everything you said. Gratitude is so important because it enables us to live in the present. We have so much to be grateful for in this day and time. We have access to education and free books online, so we can improve our skills and learn new things on daily basis. People spend too much time projecting their happiness into the future. As you said, we're taught to focus on goals, to compete, to live in the future....but no goal is worth unhappiness. When we focus only on some goal or on attaining something, our personal relationships and inner peace suffer. Gratitude opens way to new possibilities. I think it is very important to thank everyone who does something for us. A simple thank you can be so meaningful when we really mean it, when we don't just say it automatically. Yesterday I watched a video by one Russian therapist and she said how in order to improve our personal relationships, we should say at least ten nice things to the people we care about- on every day basis. She suggests five compliments and five thank you sentences a day and then you see what the person appreciates most and stick to that. It is strange how we sometimes forget to thank and compliment those people who help us and care about us the most.

  38. I love this gorgeous post on gratitude, it resonated so much with me! It was so rewarding to read your journey when it comes to embracing gratitude and everything that followed. I agree that it's definitely something that is taken for granted and not seen as so important - when it definitely should be. I still have a way to go but I'm practising it more and more each day and working as hard as I can on focusing on having a more positive outlook on life. You write so eloquently and beautifully, this post was no exception and a pure joy to read ♥︎♥︎♥︎
