TWILLY D’HERMÈS EAU DE PARFUM

Fashion paraphernalia which in my eyes mimics the refined elegance and graceful femininity are certainly the silk scarf and shawl. No matter how you wear them, around your head, neck, waist or in your hair, they constitutes an unavoidable and everlasting exponent of vogue since the dawn of civilization. The first written evidence dates back to ancient Egypt, and it is believed that scarf hauls its lineage from the age of queen Nefertiti who attired her neck with it, under extravagant bling. Although nowadays it's predominately considered as a women's ornament, for centuries men exercised the same custom as well. For example, in old Rome, shawls officiated as sweat cloths, in the far east they denoted the ranks of military personnel, and the so-called „Terracotta Army“, live size figures wreathed with scarves of diverse layout, was buried in 210. BC together with Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. On his return from Egypt, Napoleon Bonaparte bestowed a pashmina shawl to his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais. Initially she seized a cynical attitude toward this somewhat nonnative present, but in the next three years she collected over 400 scarfs, which converted in today's value costed about 80 000 £. During WW I gunpowder charges were improvised out of shawls, because silk doesn't leave residue upon combustion, and by the end of the war they turned into heralds of style. The pivotal role was played by Hermès, responsible for the emergence of the perfume that pays tribute to legendary, narrow silk Twilly scarf.
Hermès is a French brand established in 1837. and specialized in manufacturing of luxury leather bags, accessories, furniture, perfumes, jewelry and watches. Thierry Hermès started with modeling of high-quality wrought harnesses and reins for carrieges of European nobility and wealthy clientele, for what he received numerous awards, and that's precisely why the emblem depicts a fiacre with horse and coachman. His son Charles-Émile continued the family business and expanded the offer to saddles and other fell commodity, supplying the elite circles across Europe, North Africa, Asia, Russia and America. Under his management, in 1900., the corporation had launched Haut à Courroies, a satchel explicitly devised for riders to store their saddles in, the predecessor of wordly renowned and iconic Birkin bag. After retiring, his sons Adolphe and Émile-Maurice assumed the leadership and became main purveyors of the Russian emperor. At the time they also secured exclusive rights on the zipper and commenced its usage on leather merchandise in France, and it remained remembered as fermeture Hermès or Hermès fastener. In 1918. the first leather golf-jacket with zip slider is introduced, effectuated for Edward, Prince of Wales, while in 1935. some of the most famous original articles were placed, such as Sac à dépêches, later renamed to Kelly bag after Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco. Hermès Carré or square scarf was presented to the public in 1937., exactly 100 years after the foundation. For the purposes of weaving, they imported particularly strong and durable raw silk from China, entwined into deluxe 90x90 cm shawls. First among them, Jeu des Omnibus et Dames Blanches, was hand-illustrated with equestrian scenes deeply rooted in house's tradition, and it reaped an instant success as it was twice as sturdy from others on the market. Parallelly, it appeared very glamorous and sophisticated, and soon ascended into object of worship of Hollywood divas and British royalty, more acurately Queen Elizabeth who has dressed it for her postal-stamp portrait. She stayed faithful to this day, and if she's not „crowned“ with her identifiable hats, Carré scarf is her principal choice which vividly expresses her affection for dashing nuances. Audrey Hepburn once stated: „When I wear a silk scarf I never feel so definitely like a woman, a beautiful woman.“, aformentioned Grace Kelly employed it as a fancy brace for a broken arm, and Brigitte Bardot as a handband. Hermès silk shawls decorated with bright patterns and graphic, contrasting details have always symbolized dignity, power and independence, thus occupying the position of company's trademark.
Interestingly, the production process can consume even two years, because it all begins with sketches and ends with the last stitch on the hand-embroidered hem. Each scarf weighs 65 grams, requires more than 4 kilometers of silk and at least 12 different colors. Classical motifs like Bride Gala and Phoenix are complemented at regular intervals by 20 new and limited edition stencils. So far, 2000 have been submitted to the world, and some of them can easily pass as paintings on the wall and reflect a true gallery of beautiful Hermès shawls. Despite the price, it sells one every 25 seconds globally, which sufficiently testifies to their stellar status.
Simultaneously with Hermès Carré, Twilly was exhibited too, a scarf that owes its name to the word twill which indicates cross weave, a technique of fabricating resilient and draping textile. Dimensions of this long and slim shawl are about 79x5 cm and the silk retain coolness in hottest months, which is the key reason why Twilly is convenient in varying combinations: around the neck, around the wrist as a braclet, as a headband or a tailpiece, as a belt around the waist, wrapped around the straw hat or around the straps of Kelly and Birkin bags. Once a year Hermès hires finest artists and experts in the field of intricate aesthetics and design, they devote all their craftmanship to every single scarf and amaze us from season to season with a wide range of innovative colorization and imaginative prints. And while Carré shawl embodies a timeless piece, Twilly is playful, carefree, modern, charming yet charismatic addendum intended for younger population. It was the very spirit that inspired Christine Nagel to create Twilly d'Hermès perfume.
As she explained, her focal guiding thread were young women in whose lives she perceived freedom, audacity, mutual connection, mischief and irreverence, the fact that they swim against the current and impose their own rhythm and tempo. Just like them, Christine Nagel altered the rules too and transformed the aromatic code, adapting it to wayward and rebellious generation. The fragrance of Hermès girl is valiant, irrepressible and upbeat, interspersed with echoes of sandalwood, striking ginger and sensual tuberose. This unexpected union resulted in the birth of floral, spicy and exotic scent which is so unique and unusual that it captured me unreservedly and absolutely on first encounter. By the way, ginger in perfumes was uncharted feature to me previously. I love it in tea, perhaps my favorite, but this pungent and sharp tinge is the most salient component. I'm under impression that it embowers me with a veil of warmth and I personally prefer it in autumn and winter.
The premier and noticeable characteristic of the packaging is the black hat on top and scarf around the stopper. Transparent glass bottle with a round label reveal the chic simplicity, but hides a secret – the idea is that it resembles antique barouche lanterns. I've bought the perfume in a gift set adorned as Carré shawl, and within I was greeted by the recognizable orange box with a logo.
Beside the 85 ml perfume, the assortment includes Moisturizing Body Lotion of 80 ml. I myself can't recall on how many occasions I've remarked that I appreciate accompanying lotions that prolong and retain the odor, so they can be applied alone. The texture is typical for that kind of preparation, but I was delighted by hydration – it renders the skin soft, nourished and exquisitely scented, thanks to exceptionally suggestive and enduring property of ginger. The last but not the least important item is a mini version of the perfume in amount of 7.5 ml which I can comfortably carry by my side, so the cute sweetness of the tiny hat is followed by a sheer practicality.
The popularity of scarves and shawls throughout the history depended on trends, however some artefacts maintain their deserved glory based on emotions they evoke. To ennoble your external physique with Hermès Carré or Twilly, being aware of manual schematization and workmanship, the countless hours invested in their completion, is an incredible and precious experience. Scarf may not be the most apposite escort all year long, but fortunately we're blessed with a worthy replacement poured into a bottle – Twilly d'Hermès perfume.

  17. Heremes makes some beautiful things and this perfume sounds wonderful. I found a Heremes bracelet in the street a few months back while walking the dog. A neighbor had a party the night before so I assumed it belonged to one of their guests, and called out neighbor about it. The woman was so happy to have it returned.

  31. What a beautiful set! The packaging is very luxurious. Thank you for explaining its history and the inspiration behind it, that was the most interesting read! Personally, I love scarves. I often wear them. Silk or satin scarves, in particular, always elevate an outfit and make it more chic and elegant. I do agree with Audrey Hepburn in that wearing a silk scarf can make us feel like a beautiful woman.
