BY TERRY GLOSS TERRYBLY SHINE - CUPCAKE GLAZE 8

I consider faith in yourself to be one of the crucial traits that everyone should adopt from an early age, in the immediate environment of those closest to them. Sometimes, however, it happens that parents aren't aware of their value, which is then conveyed onto posterity, and in the worst case scenario, bad fathers and mothers instill feelings of unworthiness in their own children. Why do I pay so much tribute to this virtue? As clichéd as it may sound, only with self trust we have a chance to materialize what we've conjured up and to surpass numerous impediments and drawbacks, regardless of probable or frequent criticism and condemnation of our surroundings. Without it, even with praise and encouragement of others, we'll never reach our full potential. Once I've read a phrase: „A woman with little self-confidence and who knows what she wants is ready to venture into 9 circles of hell to accomplish what she has intended.“ And that is true, conviction in oneself is like the inner fire that guides and drives us, that blazes within and invigorates us to take the next step. If we observe the souls who, with their discoveries, have performed a key role in shaping the civilization as we know it, it's easy to perceive a constant: at first their ideas were questioned or even ridiculed, bashed by the comments that all of it is foolishness and that they would be better off to deal with something concrete, but they overcame one obstacle after another until their exploits saw the light of the day and transformed the world of engineering, science and art. Some of those are Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Tim Barners Lee and Bill Gates, and the list goes on indefinitely. It suffices to say that they've changed the flow of history and, through their institutions, brought us to where we are now. Each discipline, makeup industry included, is crowded with names that imprinted an indelible trace, and one of them is certainly Terry de Gunzburg who is laureled as „Steve Jobs of decorative cosmetics“, primarily because her brand By Terry has offered a nouveau and modified manner of beautification, as well as amazing products from which I selected Gloss Terrybly Shine for myself.
Terry de Gunzburg was born in a family of scientists, physicians and experts in cosmetics with bioactive compounds, so the gold-paved path funneled her to natural sciences from childhood on. She enrolled at medical school, but, as she claims, soon realized that her brain is divided to equally distinctive creative and analytical halves, thus she was more attracted to imaginative and practical enterprise united in research and innovation, much like when she was playing as a girl with mud and flowers, attempting to paint the earth. She weighed down her options and resolved to leave the studies and attend architecture, and to occupy one month before classes with a makeup course in Carita salon at 11 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, owned by sisters Maria and Rosy Carita who at the time enjoyed unreserved glory and were deemed as hairdressers of highest level in France. Fate always assemble the puzzle and, if it's destined, puts a person in the right spot at the right moment, as it's attested in the example of Terry de Gunzburg. Namely, Vogue required someone to do the makeup for photo models, and since nobody was available, Maria sent Terry with an advice: „Do whatever you know, but do it perfectly.“ She listened and introduced the style she cherished: impeccable red lips, brilliant complexion, lashes, brows and almost nothing on the eyes, which became her trademark after the session. The logical conclusion is that she didn't return to university, but built a successful career as a makeup artist, collaborating with globally renowned photographers and traveling around the world.
In 1985. she was hired as creative director for YSL where, together with monsieur Yves, she devised makeup collections and fashion shows. Mastering the technique and artifice of colors, she knew exceptionally well how to employ intuition, and Saint-Laurent was relentless in rendering her work more interesting,  as she impressed him as a wonderful, fantastic woman and he wanted every link in the chain to be a part of his realm of daydreams and to provide the best. The goal was to place the classical look of red lips and dark eyelashes in increasingly modern prospect from season to season, sophisticated and flawless, similar to today's photoshop, but also convenient for everyday needs. Luckily, this revolutionary principle was Terry's specialty so she handled it phenomenally and retained the position at YSL Beauté for 13 years.
In this period she was the only one who utilized brushes to apply substrate instead of sponges, relying on her secret weapon and recipe: she was mixing three varied features – foundation, hydration and tonic to refresh pre-existing makeup with the aid of small flat brush. She desired to recreate this gesture and embody the product which would complete all in one stroke, and the result was an item with specific formula and „8 hours of sleep in a tube“ nickname. The avant-garde artifact was so far ahead of its time that the management refused to produce it under the pretext that no one would buy it. Facial glow was not yet actualized as the cosmetic facet and it caused doubt. Terry was confronted with negative replies, but she didn't give up, she maintained credence in herself and finally, after three years of persistent persuasion, YSL relented and agreed to launch her conception which harvested an indisputable triumph and ascended to the pedestal of bestseller and prominent symbol. This is, of course, you've already guessed, the majestic Touche Eclat.
That's why she was compared to Steve Jobs, he encountered misunderstanding too, but when it hit the market, Touche Eclat solidified itself as an absolutely indispensable commodity in women's purses, and to this day hasn't lost a bit of its popularity and sales rate. Terry is credited with transforming the makeup tradition, which is summarized in her sentences: "I invented the word ‘glow’ in this industry. It sounds ridiculous but it’s true. I always believed even when I was a makeup artist that glow is much more interesting than perfection. My focus was to get the glow.“ In the post Doing What You Love & Loving What You Do I cited how graveyards are the richest treasuries – they hide all the unwritten books, unsunged songs and unfulfilled dreams, because somebody lacked the asuredness in their capacities. The same could've befallen Touche Eclat, but it didn't thanks to perseverance of Terry de Gunzburg, the illustrative paradigm of intrepidity and consistency. I don't know if teenagers nowadays comprehend in what abundance they're growing up: before Anastasia Soare, of whom I recently wrote, nobody overly cared for eyebrows, and now literally every brand supplies several different and profiled products. It's identical with highlighters, although the sheen was an obscure point previous to Terry de Gunzburg.
When Yves Saint-Laurent retired, after years of close coaction with this great man, it was impossible for Terry to operate with anyone else, so in 1998. she established her private brand, By Terry. Her vision is mirrored in the exhibition of manifest beauty, that is, the individual textures and pigments. Bearing in mind that majority of companies favor promotion over the grade of ingredients, she concentrated on them precisely. For instance, she would acquire 10 grams of expensive tincture from Japan because she wasn't satisfied with anything less, accepting solely the most excellent components. Following the philosophy that incorporates integrity and quality, she has crafted refined, luxury and glamorous products which were immensely fruitful and made women happy in planetary terms.
Her famous proclamation speaks: “Behind glamour, behind innovation, you have to be in love with science.”, and beside that she's an avid fan of artwork which she gathers with her husband. Under the motto „Less Is More“, By Terry pieces justifies the price and high-end status, and the equation is quite simple: if you seize the efficient means, you adhere to it. This is evidenced by icons such as Light-Expert Click Brush Liquid Foundation or Baume de Rose Lip Balm, affectionately called Rolls-Royce among balms.
From the assortment of skin care, perfumes and makeup, I chose Terrybly Shine Lip Gloss. At the beginning of summer I was browsing for the suitable shades and Cupcake Glaze 8 caught my attention. The official site depicts the first anti-aging, firming and voluminous gloss with exclusive Lumilip® technology for rejuvenation and sculpting, along with radiant coloration, while exquisitely feminine tones and delicate fragrance of violet, rose and iris showers your lips with sensuality. The 7 gram packaging comes in a glass tube with spongy applicator and a champagne-gold lid. Cupcake Glaze is a subtle, mild pink nuance ideal for daily and evening occasions, and the lovely floral aroma gradually whiffs away. This gloss nurses the lips, bestow them a softy suppleness, reflects an even luster and it swiftly turned into a single product I wore during the summer, with a welcomed „my lips, but better“ effect.
The story of Terry de Gunzburg is a superb lesson in how essential it is to lend an ear to your heart and gain the unwavering attitude, to thrive and improve, to believe in your talent – the ultimate outcome may astonish ourselves and all around us. We can learn a lot from this tale, and it reminded me of a wisdom: What if I fall?" Oh but my darling, what if you fly?“ Until you dare, you'll never know.
Have you tried Gloss Terrybly Shine? What are your impressions? Write me in the comments.
Best wishes till the next post!

  30. What a fascinating post. I don't think many of us stop to think too much about the minds behind our cosmetics but Terry's story is amazing. I had no idea she was behind YSL's Touche Eclat. Nor that she pioneered the glow effect. Really interesting and detailed post, thank you very much for sharing! Lisa x
